Abilia

The assignment for Abilia was to lead the research and concept development of a new digital assistive tool designed to support young adults with ADHD and autism in their daily lives including work, studies, and social interactions. This group faces a particularly high risk of social exclusion if they struggle to find meaningful routines, roles, or a clear sense of purpose. The project therefore aimed not only to address practical challenges but also to promote inclusion, independence, and personal growth.

The initial research combined a review of recent studies on autism and ADHD with interviews and surveys conducted among selected focus groups. The work included mapping existing apps, digital tools, and methods currently in use, as well as exploring what types of support users felt would most benefit their day-to-day activities and long-term planning.

The principles and early concept were based on the identified need for strong visual support helping users visualize thoughts and ideas, and making time planning less abstract. A central part of the concept was to enable users to quickly capture ideas in the form of text notes, images, or voice recordings, which could later be organized into to-do’s, guides or calendar activities.

The guiding metaphor was that of a well-organized desk, where photos, notes, and post-its could be easily moved between different compartments. This approach aimed to make the process of adding and organizing tasks less demanding while remaining meaningful, relevant, and supportive.
